ILLINOIS — A coalition of leading progressive organizations today announced a $1.4 million investment in an independent expenditure (IE) program in Illinois’ 3rd congressional district in support of Marie Newman’s primary campaign against anti-choice Democratic Congressman Dan Lipinski.

The multi-pronged program is a joint effort funded by NARAL Pro-Choice America, SEIU, EMILY’s List’s independent expenditure arm WOMEN VOTE!, Indivisible, Planned Parenthood Votes, and Illinois Federation of Teachers (IFT), and will include direct mail, digital and television ad buys aimed at exposing Lipinski’s extreme and out-of-touch record on reproductive freedom. Specifically, the program will highlight that Lipinski has:

  • Teamed up with Trump and over 200 Republicans to call on the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade
  • Supported 54 different measures to restrict or criminalize abortion
  • Opposed the Affordable Care Act requirement guaranteeing access to birth control
  • Voted seven times to defund Planned Parenthood and block access to care
  • Voted against the ACA

The program will target likely Democratic primary voters in IL-03, and includes:

  • Direct mail featuring five separate mail pieces, targeting a universe of 90,370 people in 73,840 households.
  • Television ad buys on broadcast, cable and OTT beginning on February 25 and running through March 17. The ads can be found here and here.
  • Digital persuasion ads that will run from Tuesday, February 18 through March 17.
    • The digital campaign will deliver approximately 4.4 million impressions through a combination of placements on video, display, and social ad platforms.

A separate track of the program will focus on Lipinski’s dangerous record on immigration and healthcare priorities — including past votes against the Affordable Care Act and DREAM Act — and will include:

  • Direct mail featuring three separate mail pieces, targeting a universe of 60,961 people in 37,904 households.
  • Digital ads highlighting Lipinski’s poor record on healthcare and support of Trump’s immigration policy.

“Dan Lipinski has been one of Donald Trump and Republicans’ big allies and supporters as they have repeatedly tried to ban abortion and punish women,” said Adrienne Kimmell, Chief Research & Communications Officer of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Dan Lipiniski has made it his mission in Congress to deny women reproductive freedom. Unlike Lipinski, Marie Newman is ready to stand up to Republicans to safeguard our fundamental freedoms. She is a proven fighter and will be a true champion for women and families in Congress. We’re making it clear to voters that there is a better choice for Illinois, and that choice is Marie Newman.”

“Our communities need someone who will stand with us in Washington. Marie Newman will be that leader,” said Beniamino Capellupo, Executive Director of SEIU Illinois. “Dan Lipinski has consistently voted against our healthcare needs, consistently standing with President Trump and the Republican Party against affordable healthcare. We are proud to join this diverse coalition of organizations in the fight to ensure our next leader will stand with us, not just anti-healthcare lobbyists. Our community deserves someone who will put people over politics. We know Marie Newman will do just that.”

“Indivisible is all in for Marie Newman and her campaign because she supports progressive policies to fix our broken health care and immigration systems,” said Lucy Solomon, Indivisible’s IE Director. “Marie supports expanding health care through Medicare for All and will fight for a just immigration system that keeps families together at the border and in our communities. The grassroots activists in the 3rd District are excited about working to make sure Illinois gets a representative who will fight to move us forward.”

“Dan Lipinski has made no secret of his efforts to end safe, legal abortion in Illinois and across the country,” said Jenny Lawson, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Votes. “Whether he’s voting to restrict abortion access, taking tens of thousands of dollars from anti-abortion activist groups, or urging the Supreme Court to consider overturning Roe v. Wade, Lipinski is way out of step with his district. Fortunately, voters have a champion in Marie Newman, who will fight nonstop to expand and protect access to reproductive health care because she truly understands the stakes and the urgency of this moment. Planned Parenthood Votes is proud to join the efforts to give Illinois’s 3rd district a champion they can count on to protect their rights — no matter what.”“On behalf of the 103,000 IFT members, we are thrilled to support Marie Newman. As a lifelong activist, she understands the importance of advocating for stronger public schools, labor rights, and protecting women’s rights,” said Illinois Federation of Teachers President Dan Montgomery. “We look forward to celebrating her victory on March 17.”
