In 2007, George W. Bush nominated anti-choice activist Richard Honaker of Wyoming to serve a lifetime appointment as a federal judge.
As soon as Bush's nomination became public, NARAL Pro-Choice Wyoming exposed how, as a state legislator, Honaker twice pushed for legislation to ban abortion services in the state. When his legislative efforts failed, Honaker joined forces with an anti-choice advocacy group to advance the proposal as a ballot initiative – a measure that Wyoming voters overwhelmingly rejected.
In partnership with NARAL Pro-Choice Wyoming, we worked to expose Honaker's record and warn senators about the dangers posed by this nomination. We channeled more than 65,000 messages from across the country in opposition to Honaker's nomination. Several Wyoming – and Washington, D.C. – based organizations signed a letter we organized in opposition to this nomination. Because of the pressure we brought to bear, Honaker's anti-choice activism became a central issue during a hearing on his nomination before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
In November 2008, our campaign to stop Honaker prevailed, as he withdrew his name from consideration. |
