In May 2008, NARAL Pro-Choice America was the first major pro-choice political action committee to endorse Barack Obama for president.
We communicated with a unique audience of pro-choice voters, including pro-choice Independent and Republican women, urging them to support President-elect Obama and pro-choice congressional candidates. Our independent expenditures (direct mail, get-out-the-vote phone messages) reached 290,000 households in eight battleground states - Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.
In its 2008 post-election analysis, the respected magazine National Journal ranked NARAL Pro-Choice America second among the nation's top 21 political organizations for its impressive win rate among endorsed congressional candidates in hotly contested races.
Overall, our political program has helped produce enormous gains for pro-choice forces in Congress, including the combined net gain of 44 pro-choice seats in the House and nine new pro-choice senators in the 2006 and 2008 election cycles.
