Did you know that Illinois pharmacies are required to post signs informing consumers of their right to obtain prescription contraceptives without delay?

In 2006, Governor Rod Blagojevich introduced and implemented an administrative rule that requires all pharmacies to post a sign explaining to consumers their legal right to access prescription contraceptives without hassles, lectures, or delay.  The sign must be clearly visible from the area at which the pharmacy takes prescriptions and must include information about how to file a complaint with the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation in the event that a pharmacist violates the state's law. 

NARAL Pro-Choice America submitted public comments in favor of the rule because timely access to prescription contraceptives can help reduce unintended pregnancy and the need for abortion.  When women choose birth control as their contraceptive method, they are acting responsibly and taking control of their reproductive health.  They should be treated with respect and dignity, not subjected to lectures and intimidation.
