Did you know Mississippi has only one abortion clinic in the entire state?
In the past decade, due to a series of strict laws governing reproductive health and increased pressure from anti-choice forces, six Mississippi reproductive health clinics that offered abortion services have been forced to close. The only one left standing is the Jackson Women's Health Organization (JWHO), which provides reproductive health care, including abortion, to about 4,000 patients a year and has been the sole abortion service clinic in Mississippi for the past two years.
JWHO has been subject to intense harassment and opposition from anti-choice forces. In the summer of 2006, anti-choice activists led by Operation Save America, a group with a history of clinic blockades and intimidation, converged on JWHO for a weeklong series of protests and demonstrations. However, even in the face of ongoing threats and intimidation, JWHO remains open, providing critically important reproductive health care to Mississippi women.
The PBS series Frontline recently featured the Jackson Women's Health Organization in its episode "The Last Abortion Clinic." For more information, click here.
