Lemon wedges. Crocodile dung. Seaweed. Frogs. In the age before safe, effective birth control, these were the types of options women had to rely on for birth control.

Send an e-card today to spread the word about promoting women's access to birth control -- and never going back!

Americans across the country have shared in their own words the reasons they care so deeply about women's access to birth control.

"I think that access to birth control is so important because..."

I work in women's health and parenthood should be a conscious choice. The more available and accessible birth control is, the fewer unintended pregnancies. Every child should be a wanted child. If women feel more in control of their bodies and choices, their lives are happier and they are more successful. And that alone can help make things better in the world.

Sarah, Jaffrey

Quite simply, birth control allows people to make meaningful, adult choices about the personal, professional and sexual decisions they are going to engage in throughout their lives. The ability to choose when and how many children a person wants to have, and to exercise control over that decision, is probably one of the most important advances in modern times with regard to how science has impacted our lives by improving our ability to pursue higher education and meaningful careers, as men and women. And contrary to many well-meaning people's opinions, access to birth control has helped decrease unwanted pregnancies, abortions and perhaps also child-abuse and neglect whose root cause is borne in raising unwanted children. Let's not stick our heads in the sand and pretend that abstinence-only is the only meaningful choice for all Americans; reality, common-sense, responsibility and intelligence all tell us otherwise. Abstinence may arguably be the best choice, but believing that it is the only choice or that it is exercised at a level that eliminates all the problems birth control addresses is a dangerous myth, a sign of ignorance, and an irresponsible (undemocratic, socially repressive) position in a society where most adult Americans use (or have used) birth control.

Francisco, Goffstown

it promotes gender equality and provides a means to control population. Furthermore, condoms are 99.9% effective in the spread of STD's including the HIV virus. Lastly it is an intergral and crucial component of family planning. It is also crucial that comprehensive sexuality education be taught in schools for it allows young people to make intelligent, informed decisions regarding their bodies, relationships, and their lives.

Roxane, North Haverhill

Every woman is different. As a basic human right every woman deserves be allowed to make her own choice regarding birth control and family planning.
