Lemon wedges. Crocodile dung. Seaweed. Frogs. In the age before safe, effective birth control, these were the types of options women had to rely on for birth control.

Send an e-card today to spread the word about promoting women's access to birth control -- and never going back!

Americans across the country have shared in their own words the reasons they care so deeply about women's access to birth control.

"I think that access to birth control is so important because..."

I think that access to birth control is so important because women's lives matter and children's lives are precious. I love being a mother, but it's the hardest and most important job I've ever had (I have an MBA and have worked in corporate America). Birth control allowed me to wait until I was settled and ready for the intense responsibility of motherhood. Thanks to birth control, I am happy to be a mother and my children receive a lot from me.

Susan, Kennett Square

I think that access to birth control is so important because it allows women to have control of their body. With access to birth control, women are taking responsible measures in deciding when they want to have children and with whom. The United States of America should be leading the world in giving women access to birth control without restrictions. It just makes sense that women should have access to birth control if they are having sex. It's the responsible choice and barriers to birth control shouldn't be made by our national leaders. It's 2006, not 1806!

Cynthia, York

it prevents unwanted pregnancies. My parents used birth control (I'm in my seventies). I don't know how they--and we-- would have survived during the Great Depression had they not used contraceptives.

Mae, Newtown

It is just common sense! I can't believe in this day and age we have to have a debate about the necessity and desirability of birth control!

Carole, King of Prussia

Birth control is important to me for the simple reason that it allows me to protect myself. I am in a monogomous relationship with the man I plan on marrying. He has children from a previous marriage so we are not planning on expanding our family. We are planning for his children's college years. It gives me compfort to know that we are making healthy choices for our future and the future of his pre-existing family. Finally, I am teacher in a inner-city school district and have worked with pregnant and parenting teens for several years. The lack of information and protection for the women I meet is astounding. They have contracted diseases along with unwanted pregnancies. The myriad of cases where child abuse is present is sobering. I have seen malnurished children, neglected children and beaten children - all from women who had no business bringing another life into this world but didn't have the access to information or the access to preventative measures.

Sarah, Wernersville

it can prevent almost all unwanted pregnacies; thereby reducing the need for abortion. Prevention should always be the first course of action.

Rosemary, Holland

It enables women to take control of their bodies and their choices about reproduction. It is essential that women who desire birth control be given access to ensure that unwanted pregnancies are avoided. Understanding the importance surrounding the choice to have a child is essential for women in our country and the birth control pill is an essential element in this choice.

Kelly, Philadelphia

Being a parent and raising a child is the most important thing you will ever do in your life. This should be a planned and welcomed event. People should be educated about birth control and the facts and dangers of sex (disease and pregnancy).

Erin, Harrison City

I think that access to birth control is so important because if we lack control of our own bodies, we have lost the most basic freedom that exists.

Leslie, Pittsburgh
