In the late sixties I was in medical school in Maryland which had just passed a law allowing abortions for state residents. A forty year old married woman from Tennessee was admitted for an abortion. As a student I did an evaluation as part of my training. Her story strengthened my belief that abortion was a personal decision that should not be interfered with by government. Furthermore, the septic complications of the "coathanger" abortions that we saw prior to the legalization of abortion were a real eye-opener for a young medical student.
