Pro-Choice Voter Guide: Florida District 20
Rep. Alcee Hastings
Rep. Alcee Hastings (D) is pro-choice. He is the incumbent.
NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC has endorsed Rep. Hastings.
Rep. Hastings earned a 100-percent score in NARAL Pro-Choice America's 2011 Congressional Record on Choice.
Voted twice against the proposal to block Planned Parenthood from receiving any federal funds, which would have denied millions of Americans access to contraception, cancer screenings, and other basic medical care.
Voted against H.R.3, a bill that would ban abortion coverage in state health-insurance exchanges; impose tax penalties on small businesses and many individuals who purchase private health plans that include abortion coverage; and make permanent several restrictions that block many women from accessing abortion care.
Voted to ensure that hospitals must provide emergency abortion care to women who could die without it.
Rep. Hastings said, "I have been committed to protecting the Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade by maintaining a 100 percent pro-choice voting record. I believe that the decision to have an abortion is between a woman and her doctor, not the government. I support abortions that are rare, safe, and legal. And, we must ensure that those men and women who provide these services are protected from violence and intimidation."
On his congressional website, Rep. Hastings states:"These pieces of legislation will hurt millions of women, especially low-income communities and minorities. Rest assured that I will continue to defend a woman's right to choose and do everything in my power to oppose the passage of H.R. 3, H.R. 217, and any other anti-choice legislation. Improving the health and well-being of all women and girls is my priority. I will also continue to support legislative efforts that help increase access to the health care services and information that women need and deserve."
