Pro-Choice Voter Guide: Idaho District 02
Rep. Mike Simpson
Rep. Mike Simpson (R) is anti-choice. He is the incumbent.
Rep. Simpson earned a 0-percent score in NARAL Pro-Choice America's 2011 Congressional Record on Choice.
Voted twice to block Planned Parenthood from receiving any federal funds, which would have denied millions of Americans access to contraception, cancer screenings, and other basic medical care.
Voted for H.R.3, a bill that would ban abortion coverage in state health-insurance exchanges; impose tax penalties on small businesses and many individuals who purchase private health plans that include abortion coverage; and make permanent several restrictions that block many women from accessing abortion care.
Voted to allow hospitals to refuse to provide emergency abortion care to women who could die without it.
On his congressional website, Rep. Simpson states: "I oppose abortion as means of birth control and have consistently voted to cut off federal funding for any organization that offers or encourages abortions. Furthermore, I believe adoption is a viable alternative to abortion. As such, I have supported efforts to curb the practice of abortion while serving in the House of Representatives."
State Sen. Nicole LeFavour
State Sen. Nicole LeFavour (D) is pro-choice.
On the 2010 Project Vote Smart Political Courage Test, LeFavour states, "Terminating a pregnancy is a medical decision that is very personal and should be made by a woman and her physician, in consultation with her own faith or beliefs, family or those she personally choose to consult with - not by judges, law makers or political parties."
