Pro-Choice Voter Guide: Illinois District 05
Rep. Mike Quigley
Rep. Mike Quigley (D) is pro-choice. He is the incumbent.
NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC has endorsed Rep. Quigley.
Rep. Quigley earned a 100-percent score in NARAL Pro-Choice America's 2011 Congressional Record on Choice.
Voted twice against the proposal to block Planned Parenthood from receiving any federal funds, which would have denied millions of Americans access to contraception, cancer screenings, and other basic medical care.
Voted against H.R.3, a bill that would ban abortion coverage in state health-insurance exchanges; impose tax penalties on small businesses and many individuals who purchase private health plans that include abortion coverage; and make permanent several restrictions that block many women from accessing abortion care.
Voted to ensure that hospitals must provide emergency abortion care to women who could die without it.
On his congressional website, Rep. Quigley states: "Our first order of business is to prevent unintended pregnancies, and by supporting organizations with family planning services, we can do just that. Educating and communicating are principal factors that will deter unplanned pregnancies. However, Mike believes that a woman's right to choose is just that -- her right -- and will fight to protect it."
Rep. Quigley said, "This vote marks a sad and disheartening day in America's history. H.R. 3 erases decades of progress for women and turns back the clock to a time when women could not make their own life decisions. I was proud to vote against this bill, and I will continue to fight to ensure that it never becomes law."
