Gary Peters (D)
U.S. House of Representatives, Michigan district 09
- Gary Peters, a former State Senator and former State Lottery Commissioner, is fully pro-choice.
- Peters is running against anti-choice Representative Joe Knollenberg, who received a 0% pro-choice rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America in 2007. Knollenberg is a senior member of the House Appropriations Committee and never even considers voting for family-planning issues that would reduce the need for abortions.
- Gary Peters has a history of standing up for his pro-choice values when he served in the state Senate. The Associated Press reported on May 2, 2002: "Supporters of the bill said they don't want taxpayers' money to go to organizations that support abortion services…Abortion rights advocates, meanwhile, say the bill would hurt Planned Parenthood's ability to provide low-income women with services such as cervical cancer screenings and HIV/AIDS treatment. ‘Unwanted pregnancies will occur' because of funding struggle, said Sen. Gary Peters, D-West Bloomfield. 'This bill is playing a game of risky politics.'"
