Jeanne Shaheen (D)

U.S. Senate, New Hampshire

  • Jeanne Shaheen is the former governor of New Hampshire and a former State Senator.
  • Shaheen is running against Senator John Sununu who is staunchly anti-choice, and even opposes birth control, sex education, and teen-pregnancy prevention programs.  Senator Sununu has received a 0% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America every year since he was elected as Senator in 2002.
  • Shaheen has an excellent record of standing up for women's reproductive rights. As Governor, Shaheen signed legislation repealing New Hampshire's pre-Roe v. Wade law making abortion a felony. She also signed a bill to ensure health insurance coverage for contraceptives.
  • As a state Senator, Shaheen introduced legislation to ensure safe access to women's health care clinics.
  • In the state senate, Shaheen is on record in 1992 stating "The issue should be decided by a woman and her family and her physician.  Government should not be involved in this." [New Hampshire Senate Journal, 1149, 4/9/92]
  • About abortion, Shaheen said, ""This issue should be decided by a woman and her family and her physician. Government should not be involved in this." [New Hampshire Senate Journal, 1149, April 9, 1992]
