Jeanne Shaheen is the former governor of New Hampshire and a former State Senator.
Shaheen is running against Senator John Sununu who is staunchly anti-choice, and even opposes birth control, sex education, and teen-pregnancy prevention programs. Senator Sununu has received a 0% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America every year since he was elected as Senator in 2002.
Shaheen has an excellent record of standing up for women's reproductive rights. As Governor, Shaheen signed legislation repealing New Hampshire's pre-Roe v. Wade law making abortion a felony. She also signed a bill to ensure health insurance coverage for contraceptives.
As a state Senator, Shaheen introduced legislation to ensure safe access to women's health care clinics.
In the state senate, Shaheen is on record in 1992 stating "The issue should be decided by a woman and her family and her physician. Government should not be involved in this." [New Hampshire Senate Journal, 1149, 4/9/92]
