Chicago, Illinois - On Tuesday, May 6, NARAL Pro-Choice America will host the 14th annual Chicago Power of Choice luncheon, featuring Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Ellen Goodman and filmmaker Harold Ramis. The event will focus on NARAL Pro-Choice America's 2008 electoral program, Protect & Elect.
NARAL Pro-Choice America plays a unique role in elections: moving pro-choice Independent and Republican women to vote for pro-choice candidates, regardless of party affiliation. As the presidential election continues to unfold, NARAL Pro-Choice America is focusing on debunking the "Myth of the Moderate Maverick," the perception among some that John McCain is pro-choice.
"We are fortunate to have two equally strong, pro-choice candidates on the Democratic side. There will be a clear difference between the pro-choice candidate and John McCain when it comes to choice," said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. "John McCain called for the overturning of Roe v. Wade. He voted to cut funding for birth control and cancer screenings for women. McCain is neither a moderate, nor a maverick. We are getting enthusiastic support from Chicago because our supporters know that the more resources we have, the more votes we can move away from John McCain and toward the pro-choice candidate."
