Change We Can Believe In vs. More of the Same

NARAL Pro-Choice America releases candidates' records on critical choice-related issues

Washington, DC – Last night, Sen. Barack Obama secured the number of delegates necessary to move on as the presumptive Democratic nominee for president in the fall. Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, whose organization endorsed Obama in May, said that the real differences between Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama were clear last night.

"NARAL Pro-Choice America congratulates Sen. Obama for securing the Democratic nomination for president and looks forward to working with him as the next pro-choice president in the White House," Keenan said. "There are very real differences between Obama and his Republican opponent, John McCain. Nothing McCain said last night about freedom and privacy from government intrusion should be misconstrued. McCain's more than two decades in office have provided him with a record that he will not be able to deny this fall. McCain may claim to be a moderate and a maverick, but on the issue of choice, he is neither."

Keenan continued that her organization would be targeting pro-choice Republican and Independent women throughout the election season, educating them on McCain's extreme anti-choice record.

"We will continue our efforts to reach pro-choice Americans across this country, especially the critical voting bloc of pro-choice Republican and Independent women. Once these voters hear that John McCain has voted to block low-income women's access to birth control, supported both of President Bush's anti-choice nominees to the Supreme Court, and even said he would support the overturn of Roe v. Wade, they will support pro-choice Barack Obama for president."

In one of the organization's first outreach efforts since endorsing Obama for president, NARAL Pro-Choice America sent its more than one-million members and activists a comparison of Obama and McCain on critical reproductive health issues, such as access to abortion care, medically accurate sex education, and birth control.
