More of the McSame: Cindy McCain Steals Page from Bush Playbook on Roe v. Wade

Washington, D.C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued the following statement in response to media reports that Cindy McCain told CBS Anchor Katie Couric that she shared her husband's anti-choice views, but later was reversed by her husband's campaign spokesperson who said Mrs. McCain does not want Roe v. Wade overturned. The campaign's statement mirrors an attempt by the Bush administration early in its tenure to appeal to moderate voters when Laura Bush said she didn't believe Roe should be overturned.

"Today's conflicting statements by Cindy McCain and the McCain campaign on Roe v. Wade sound like more of the McSame. The McCain campaign stole a page from the Bush playbook of 2000.  Voters are much smarter than the McSame campaign gives them credit for:  the difference between a Texas governor running for president in 2000 and a Washington, DC politician like John McCain in 2008 is McCain's 25-year anti-choice voting record. It will take more than an interview with Katie Couric and the spin of the McCain campaign to distract moderate voters from John McCain's call for the overturn of Roe and consistent votes against a woman's right to choose."
