NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC Endorses Rep. Paul Hodes for New Hampshire Senate Contest

Pro-choice organization cites potential of a pro-choice pickup in the Granite State

Washington, DC – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, today announced that her organization's political action committee proudly endorsed Rep. Paul Hodes (D-N.H.) for New Hampshire's U.S. Senate race.

"I am honored to receive the endorsement from NARAL Pro-Choice America," Rep. Hodes said. "I have worked for and believe in the fundamental right of women to make medical decisions without the fear of government intervention. I will be a Senator who stands up to those that would work to criminalize women and their doctors and I will always fight to protect the rights that Roe v. Wade guarantees to every woman."

NARAL Pro-Choice America has more than 10,000 member activists in the Granite State that the organization will mobilize in support of Rep. Hodes' election to the U.S. Senate.

"Rep. Hodes has a distinguished record of protecting and defending a woman's right to choose," Keenan said. "Most recently, Rep. Hodes played an important role in working to eliminate funding for dangerous and deceptive 'abstinence-only' programs. He's worked hard to answer the public's call to move away from these failed Bush-backed policies that have put our teens at risk. We are confident that, as a senator, Rep. Hodes will continue to stand up for women's freedom and privacy and keep up New Hampshire's tradition of strong pro-choice advocates, such as Gov. John Lynch, Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, and Rep. Carol Shea-Porter. Rep. Hodes' candidacy marks a great opportunity to add to the list of pro-choice senators."

Keenan said Hodes is likely to face an anti-choice opponent in the 2010 general election, setting up a clear contrast between a candidate who supports a woman's right to choose and one who wants politicians involved in women's personal, private decisions.

NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC contributed the maximum amount of $10,000 to Hodes for the primary and general elections.

Overall, NARAL Pro-Choice America's political program has helped produce enormous gains for pro-choice forces in Congress, including the combined net gain of 44 pro-choice seats in the House and nine new pro-choice senators in the 2006 and 2008 election cycles. In its 2008 post-election analysis, National Journal ranked NARAL Pro-Choice America second among the nation's top 21 political organizations for its impressive win rate among endorsed congressional candidates in hotly contested races.
