McCain Benefiting from Moderate Image? Not for LongMcCain exposes real anti-choice views on national television
Washington, DC – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, vowed today that her organization will not let stand the misperception that anti-choice presidential candidate Sen. John McCain represents the moderate wing of his party.
Keenan said that McCain's interview with Chris Matthews last night exposed his extreme, anti-choice beliefs. When asked if he would nominate a pro-choice Republican as his vice president, McCain replied that it would be difficult for him to even consider a pro-choice Republican as a vice-presidential running mate, saying, "it's basically the respect and cherishing of the right of the unborn is one of the fundamental principles of my party. And it's a -- and it's a deeply held belief of mine." McCain continued that "the rights of the unborn is one of my most important values."
"John McCain has a 25-year record of voting against women's freedom and privacy, and he has even gone so far as to call for the overturn of Roe v. Wade," Keenan said. "Despite McCain's documented record of hostility toward a woman's right to choose, he has been hiding behind the 'moderate maverick' image he cultivated during his last run for president. But when it comes to choice, McCain is neither a moderate nor a maverick. In fact, when it comes to choice, a McCain presidency would just be another four years of a Bush-style White House."
Sen. McCain has voted anti-choice 125 times out of 130 opportunities including, votes against birth control, measures that would protect women and doctors from violence at health clinics, and funding for teen-pregnancy-prevention programs. He has even gone further than President Bush in calling for the overturn of Roe v. Wade. As we move toward the general election, NARAL Pro-Choice America will make sure that voters, especially pro-choice Independent and Republican women, know the truth about Sen. McCain.
