NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC Endorses Candidates in Top U.S. Senate and House Contests

NARAL Pro-Choice America looks to build on 2006 gains with more pro-choice victories in 2008

Washington, DC – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, announced that her organization's political action committee proudly endorsed another group of outstanding pro-choice candidates in key U.S. House and Senate races across the country.

Keenan also said the candidates were part of her organization's Protect & Elect 2008 electoral program. NARAL Pro-Choice America and its PAC will marshal its resources to protect the pro-choice gains made in 2006 while electing even more pro-choice candidates to the House, the Senate, and White House. In 2006, 74 percent of NARAL Pro-Choice America-backed candidates won their races.

"We have another outstanding slate of pro-choice candidates across the country in 2008," Keenan said. "Despite our advancements in the last election cycle, anti-choice members of Congress still outnumber pro-choice members. But when looking at the caliber of candidates for the Senate and the House, we are confident that we will add to our numbers in 2008 and, as the next Congress convenes in 2009, provide newly elected pro-choice President Barack Obama with even more pro-choice allies in Congress."

In Senate races, NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC endorsed a list of strong pro-choice candidates running against anti-choice incumbents or for open seats currently held by anti-choice senators:  Mark Begich in Alaska, Al Franken in Minnesota, Jeff Merkley in Oregon, Rick Noriega in Texas, Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire, Mark Udall in Colorado, and Tom Udall in New Mexico.

NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC also endorsed pro-choice incumbent Senate Majority Whip Richard Durbin of Illinois and Sens. John Kerry of Massachusetts and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.

In addition to the U.S. Senate races, Keenan said the landscape in key U.S. House races also includes promising pro-choice prospects.

NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC endorsed Gerry Connolly in Virginia's 11th District, Martin Heinrich in New Mexico's 1st  District, and Mary Jo Kilroy in Ohio's 15th District, all of whom are pro-choice candidates seeking to replace outgoing anti- or mixed-choice incumbents.

NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC endorsed seven pro-choice challengers: John Adler in New Jersey's 3rd District, Darcy Burner in Washington's 8th District, Christine Jennings in Florida's 13th District, Bob Lord in Arizona's 3rd District, Gary Peters in Michigan's 9th District, Mark Schauer in Michigan's 7th District, and Dennis Shulman in New Jersey's 5th District.

In addition to open seats and challenger races, NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC endorsed 23 pro-choice incumbents, including Steven Cohen in Tennessee's 9th District, Rosa DeLauro in Connecticut's 3rd District, Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick in Michigan's 13th District, Jerry McNerney in California's 11th District, Chris Murphy in Connecticut's 5th District, and Patrick Murphy in Pennsylvania's 8th District.
