Democratic National Convention Delegates Overwhelmingly Pro-ChoicePro-choice delegates compliment the Party's strong pro-choice platform
Washington, D.C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, today announced that a survey of delegates and superdelegates revealed that 87 percent of respondents are pro-choice. This announcement comes on the heels of the strong pro-choice position outlined in the Democratic National Committee's 2008 platform.
"As in years past, delegates to the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver are overwhelmingly pro-choice," Keenan said. "Pro-choice Americans can be confident that Sen. Barack Obama and the Democratic Party will continue to stand up for women's freedom and privacy. We look forward to working with pro-choice delegates, superdelegates, and the party from now until the election to ensure that we get out the vote and elect pro-choice Sen. Obama to the White House."
The survey covered all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In addition, more than 170 pro-choice delegates from Alaska to Maine agreed to serve as "whips" for NARAL Pro-Choice America during the convention. These whips will help implement various aspects of NARAL Pro-Choice America's convention activities.
Keenan continued that as the Democratic delegates arrive in Denver, Sen. McCain's platform committee will be meeting to draft their party's platform language.
"Based on Sen. McCain's 25-year anti-choice voting record, pro-choice Americans can only assume that the Republican Party's platform language will reinforce Bush's far-right anti-choice agenda and make clear that a John McCain presidency will just be more of the same," Keenan said. "During his two decades in Washington, McCain has voted to block women's access to abortion care, and birth control, and has even opposed comprehensive sex-education programs in our high schools. It's time to change direction in this country, and elect pro-choice Sen. Barack Obama. NARAL Pro-Choice America is dedicated to working with pro-choice Americans throughout the country to make sure we send a pro-choice president, Barack Obama, to the White House in November."
