New NARAL Pro-Choice America Video Calls on McCain to Give 'Straight Talk' on Birth Control at the Debate

Three months since McCain first dodged question of insurance coverage, Americans are still waiting

Washington, D.C. – Today, Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, announced the launch of the organization's second video in a planned series that highlights McCain's infamous eight-second pause when asked whether insurance companies that cover Viagra, should also cover birth control. An email alert showcasing the video will be sent to half a million activists and will also urge Americans to tell debate moderator Bob Schieffer that John McCain owes millions of American women voters an answer about birth control coverage. "It's about time voters get a little 'straight talk' from John McCain," Keenan said. "It's been months since he consecutively flubbed questions about insurance coverage of birth control. And he's even voted on this issue during his two decades in Washington. So, why can't he just give an honest answer?"

Over the last three months McCain has ducked and dodged this issue. McCain's refusal to answer could come from the fact that he has voted against legislation that would require insurance companies to cover prescription drugs, like Viagra and birth control, equally.

"McCain knows that voters support commonsense measures to prevent unintended pregnancy, just like the ones he has voted against," Keenan continued. "He does not want to tell the American public that he opposed bills to increase access to birth control, he'd prefer to give vague, misleading responses. But pro-choice Americans are demanding that John McCain answer the questions about his anti-contraception record in Washington."

This video series is intended to educate pro-choice voters about the inaccuracies behind the McCain-Palin "maverick" image. McCain and Palin's extreme anti-choice positions include opposition to a woman's right to choose, even in cases of rape or incest, and they even go so far as to oppose birth control and comprehensive sex-education. The first video in the series received 30,000 views in the first few days of its launch and was promoted through special ad buys on newspaper and blog sites in targeted battleground states. These videos complement NARAL Pro-Choice America's efforts to reach young voters and the pro-choice Republican and Independent women that NARAL Pro-Choice America is unique in targeting.
