NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC Endorses Another Slate of Candidates in Top Congressional Contests
Washington, DC – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, announced that her organization's political action committee proudly endorsed another group of outstanding pro-choice candidates in key U.S. House and Senate races across the country.
Keenan also said NARAL Pro-Choice America and its PAC will marshal its resources to protect the pro-choice gains made in 2006 while electing even more pro-choice candidates to the House, the Senate, and White House. In 2006, 74 percent of NARAL Pro-Choice America-backed candidates won their races.
"The combination of a pro-choice leader like Sen. Barack Obama at the top of the ticket and such dynamic pro-choice candidates at the congressional level is energizing voters across the country," Keenan said. "In the final phase of this election cycle, independent and moderate voters are looking for leaders who offer commonsense solutions, not the tired divisive political attacks that many anti-choice candidates, including John McCain, are likely to use between now and Election Day."
NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC endorsed seven pro-choice candidates who are seeking to replace outgoing anti- or mixed-choice incumbents. The organization's PAC endorsed Debbie Halvorson in Illinois' 11th District, Ashwin Madia in Minnesota's 3rd District, and Sharen Neuhardt in Ohio's 7th District. The other endorsed candidates are New Jersey's John Adler in the 3rd District and Linda Stender in the 7th District and New York's Dan Maffei in the 25th District and Paul Tonko in the 21st District.
NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC endorsed seven pro-choice candidates challenging anti-choice incumbents, including three in Florida: Alan Grayson in the 8th District, Suzanne Kosmas in the 24th District, and Annette Taddeo in the 18th District. Other leading NARAL PAC-endorsed challengers include Judy Feder in Virginia's 10th District, Nick Leibham in California's 50th District, Betsey Markey in Colorado's 4th District, and Eric Massa in New York's 29th District.
In addition to open seats and challenger races, NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC recently endorsed 17 pro-choice incumbents, including two from Arizona: Gabrielle Giffords in the 8th District and Harry Mitchell in the 5th District. Other endorsed incumbents include Russ Carnahan in Missouri's 3rd District, Keith Ellison in Minnesota's 5th District, Kirsten Gillibrand in New York's 20th District, Mazie Hirono in Hawaii's 2nd District, Paul Hodes in New Hampshire's 2nd District, Patrick Murphy in Pennsylvania's 8th District, and Ed Perlmutter in Colorado's 7th District.
In Senate races, NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC already endorsed a list of strong pro-choice candidates running against anti-choice incumbents or for open seats currently held by anti-choice senators: Mark Begich in Alaska, Al Franken in Minnesota, Jeff Merkley in Oregon, Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire, Mark Udall in Colorado, and Tom Udall in New Mexico. On May 14, NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC became the first major pro-choice organization to endorse Sen. Obama's candidacy.
