NARAL Pro-Choice America Exposes McCain's Anti-Birth-Control Record in Third Mail Piece to Battleground States

Washington, DC – One week before Election Day, Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, announced that her organization is sending their third piece of mail to pivotal pro-choice Independent and Republican women in eight battleground states.

The mail piece reminds voters of McCain's extreme anti-choice record, in particular his 22 votes against birth control. Not only is John McCain opposed to women's access to abortion care, he has a proven record against commonsense measures that would reduce the need for abortion, such as insurance coverage for birth control. NARAL Pro-Choice America is communicating with pro-choice Independent and Republican women in Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. "Undecided voters in this country are going to be spending the next week looking for an issue that makes it clear to them which candidate to support for president on November 4," Keenan said. "And it is up to every pro-choice American to make sure their family, friends, neighbors, and coworkers, know that John McCain is not the moderate he claims to be. McCain has voted against women's reproductive healthcare 125 times during his more than two decades in Washington, and he's pledged to continue that record as president. The majority of Americans across this country want their next president to restore freedom and privacy, protect a woman's right to make healthcare decisions without government interference, and promote commonsense measures to solve the problems facing our country. For many voters, the issue of choice will help make a clear distinction that John McCain represents another four years of the same, while Barack Obama is the candidate who will lead this country in a new and positive direction."

NARAL Pro-Choice America is unique in its ability to target pro-choice Independent and Republican women voters. Last week, this critical voting bloc received the first two mail pieces in the series emphasizing McCain's opposition to birth control, and his votes against bills that would require insurance companies that cover Viagra to also cover birth control. In addition, the organization released a poll conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research that showed Republican and Independent pro-choice women in these same eight presidential swing states leaning toward Barack Obama by four points, 48 to 44 percent. The research also demonstrated that choice is a central issue for this swing voting bloc, and it can move them in a more powerful way than other traditional Democratic issues or any of the central critiques of John McCain. Among the Republican bloc, it provides the only opening for Barack Obama to gain crossover support. The polling summary can be viewed at,
