NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC Endorses D’AlessandroPro-choice group cites incumbent Lynch’s vote for infamous Stupak attack during health-reform debate
Washington, DC – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, announced that her organization’s political action committee proudly endorsed Mac D’Alessandro in his campaign against anti-choice incumbent Rep. Stephen Lynch in Massachusetts’ 9th Congressional District.
“I'm proud to have the support of the NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC in my campaign for Congress," said Mac D'Alessandro, Democratic candidate for Congress in the 9th District. “At a time when we see attacks on choice, such as the Stupak amendment during health-care reform, it's more important than ever that we elect leaders who are willing to stand up for what's right. As a Congressman, I'll be a strong and consistent voice in support of policies that protect women’s reproductive freedom and privacy."
Keenan also cited Lynch’s vote, in 2009, for Rep. Bart Stupak’s egregious abortion-coverage ban during the health-reform debate. Had it been included in the final law, the Stupak measure would have effectively banned insurance coverage for abortion in the new health system.
“We are proud to support Mac D’Alessandro in this campaign. He has a record of fighting for fairness and equality,” Keenan said. “Primary voters have a clear choice. During the health-reform debate, Lynch voted for the worst attack on women’s reproductive rights in a generation. The fair-minded voters of Massachusetts’ 9th District deserve better—and they can choose that kind of representation by replacing Lynch with a pro-choice leader like Mac D’Alessandro.”
Andrea Miller, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, echoed the need for change in favor of women’s freedom and privacy. She said Lynch’s multiple votes banning women serving overseas in the military from accessing abortion services with their money are far outside the mainstream.
“Rep. Lynch has repeatedly voted to undermine the right to choose for some of the most vulnerable women among us, including women stationed overseas with no access to safe, legal abortion care and women in the United States who face health complications during their pregnancies,” said Miller. “Thankfully, on September 14th, the 9th District has an opportunity to vote for a candidate – Mac D’Alessandro – who will faithfully represent their pro-choice values.”
Overall, NARAL Pro-Choice America's political program has helped produce enormous gains for pro-choice forces in Congress, including the combined net gain of 44 pro-choice seats in the House and nine new pro-choice senators in the 2006 and 2008 election cycles. In its 2008 post-election analysis, National Journal ranked NARAL Pro-Choice America second among the nation's top 21 political organizations for its impressive win rate among endorsed congressional candidates in hotly contested races.
