NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC Endorses Maffei
Washington, DC – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, announced that her organization’s political action committee proudly endorsed Rep. Dan Maffei for re-election in New York’s 25th District.
“Earning NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC’s endorsement is a source of pride for my campaign,” Rep. Maffei said. “Standing up for the rights of women in my district is critical, and at a time when extreme anti-choice candidates are running for Congress, it is so important that we not take anything for granted.”
Keenan said the PAC contributed $5,000 to Rep. Maffei’s primary campaign. In the general election, he will face an anti-choice activist, Ann Marie Buerkle, who has touted her support from right-wing organizations and from unsuccessful vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
“Rep. Maffei is an effective and energetic voice for the values of freedom and privacy, and we are proud to support his campaign,” Keenan said. “Make no mistake, there is a clear choice for voters in the 25th District. Rep. Maffei believes women should be able to make the personal, private decisions that are best for them and their family. His opponent sides with Sarah Palin and thinks politicians should be allowed to interfere in these decisions. We are confident that voters will see this contrast and choose to support a leader like Maffei who represents the district’s mainstream values.”
Keenan also hailed Maffei, who earned a perfect pro-choice record with NARAL Pro-Choice America and voted against the infamous Stupak amendment to the health-reform bill. Had it been included in the final law, the Stupak measure would have effectively banned insurance coverage for abortion in the new health system.
Overall, NARAL Pro-Choice America's political program has helped produce enormous gains for pro-choice forces in Congress, including the combined net gain of 44 pro-choice seats in the House and nine new pro-choice senators in the 2006 and 2008 election cycles. In its 2008 post-election analysis, National Journal ranked NARAL Pro-Choice America second among the nation's top 21 political organizations for its impressive win rate among endorsed congressional candidates in hotly contested races.
