Richmond Win Marks Pro-Choice Pick-Up in Congress
Washington, D.C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, praised the voters of Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District for electing NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC-endorsed candidate Cedric Richmond, who defeated anti-choice incumbent Rep. Joseph Cao.
"Rep.-elect Richmond's victory is a sign that voters grew tired of a representative who voted with the most extreme anti-choice politicians in the U.S. House of Representatives," Keenan said. "Voters want leaders like Rep.-elect Richmond. He will stand up for women's reproductive freedom while supporting commonsense, common-ground proposals, like better access to birth control, that would prevent unintended pregnancies and thus reduce the need for abortion. We look forward to working with Rep.-elect Richmond in defending the health-care reform law that includes the promise of improved prenatal care and contraceptive services for women."
NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC contributed $10,000 to Cedric Richmond's campaign. In addition, the organization mobilized its 635 member activists in Louisiana's 2nd Congressional District in support of Richmond's candidacy. NARAL Pro-Choice America also featured Richmond on BlogForChoice.com, its website, and its Facebook page.
