NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC Endorses Attorney General Martha Coakley for Massachusetts Senate Contest

Pro-choice organization calls Coakley the candidate who will uphold the late Sen. Edward Kennedy's legacy as a pro-choice champion

Washington, DC – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, today announced that her organization's political action committee proudly endorsed pro-choice Attorney General Martha Coakley in her bid for the open U.S. Senate seat in Massachusetts.

"I am honored to receive the endorsement of NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC," said Coakley. "As the only candidate in this race who has been and always will be a steadfast defender of a woman's right to choose, I know the work that NARAL Pro-Choice America does for women's health every day is vitally important."

NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC contributed $5,000 to Coakley for her special general-election campaign, and Keenan said the organization will mobilize its 39,269 member activists in Massachusetts in support of her campaign.

"Martha Coakley will be an outstanding advocate for Massachusetts' commonsense pro-choice values," Keenan said. "Coakley brings a distinguished record of support for a woman's right to choose to this race. We are confident that, as a member of the U.S. Senate, Coakley will continue to stand up for women's freedom and privacy in the proud tradition of Sen. Edward Kennedy – who was a tireless advocate for women's equality and an eloquent guardian of the values of freedom and privacy."

Andrea Miller, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, said Coakley's record of action on behalf of a woman's right to choose makes her the clear choice for voters in the Commonwealth.

"From the earliest days of her career, Martha Coakley has proven that she is a courageous champion of choice who is not afraid to stand for – and with – the most vulnerable women in the Commonwealth," said Miller. "She understands that every woman deserves the right to make personal, private decisions about pregnancy and parenting – regardless of her income, age, race, or zip code."

Overall, NARAL Pro-Choice America's political program has helped produce enormous gains for pro-choice forces in Congress, including the combined net gain of 44 pro-choice seats in the House and nine new pro-choice senators in the 2006 and 2008 election cycles. In its 2008 post-election analysis, National Journal ranked NARAL Pro-Choice America second among the nation's top 21 political organizations for its impressive win rate among endorsed congressional candidates in hotly contested races.
