NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC Endorses Jose Hernandez in California’s 10th District PrimaryAstronaut’s previous work to improve women’s health a clear contrast with incumbent who voted to cut funding for breast-cancer screenings
Washington, D.C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, announced that her organization’s political action committee endorsed Jose Hernandez in the primary in California’s 10th Congressional District. Hernandez is an engineer who worked on technology to make early detection of breast cancer possible.
“As a devoted father, brother, and son, I understand the importance of providing quality health and wellness care to women,” said Jose Hernandez, former astronaut and Democratic candidate for Congress. “I look forward to bringing an engineer’s style of problem solving to Washington and making sure that being a woman will never be a pre-existing condition again. I support a woman's right to choose and will also work to protect women's access to family-planning services and cancer screenings, which the current representative from this district voted to defund.”
Keenan said voters in the 10th District have the opportunity to nominate a champion of the values of freedom and privacy to run against anti-choice incumbent Rep. Jeff Denham. In 2011, the House held eight votes on choice-related issues, the highest number in more than a decade. Rep. Denham voted anti-choice at every opportunity, earning a zero-percent rating in NARAL Pro-Choice America’s Congressional Record on Choice. Among these bad votes, Denham backed a measure that could subject rape survivors who choose abortion to audits by the Internal Revenue Service and another bill that would allow hospitals to deny emergency abortion care to women who would die without it.
“The U.S. House of Representatives has declared a War on Women, and Jeff Denham is on the wrong side every time,” Keenan said. “Jose Hernandez represents the district’s mainstream values, and he will fight to make sure politicians won’t interfere in women’s personal, private decisions. He will focus on our country’s priorities rather than attack a woman’s right to choose. We will make sure voters know that Hernandez is the best candidate to take on Denham in November.”
“Jose Hernandez has worked to improve women’s health, while Jeff Denham voted to defund family-planning programs that enable millions of women to get cancer screenings,” Keenan said. “To say there is a difference between these candidates is an understatement.”
