With 18 Days Until the Election, Anti-Choice Candidates Race to the Bottom on Women’s Reproductive Rights
Washington, D.C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, expressed grave concern over anti-choice candidates’ recent anti-women comments.
“This week, Americans have watched in dismay while one candidate after another expresses blatant disregard for issues that matter to women,” Keenan said. “From Mitt Romney’s ‘binder full of women’ comment to Rep. Joe Walsh’s claim that pregnancy never threatens a woman’s life to Paul Ryan’s attempt to trivialize the attacks on women’s reproductive rights, we are reminded how out of touch these candidates are on fundamental issues. These comments are callous, out of touch, and in some cases don’t reflect even a basic understanding of biology. Americans deserve -- and will elect -- leaders who show compassion, not contempt for their constituents. “
NARAL Pro-Choice America’s aggressive 2012 electoral program includes mail and ad buys in targeted districts to key women voters in support of pro-choice candidates. To date, the organization’s political action committee has contributed more than $600,000 this cycle to pro-choice candidates in federal races, and the organization recently released an online voter guide that features information on where candidates running for the House and Senate stand on choice.
“These last few weeks are critical. Voters know how much is at stake,” Keenan said. “NARAL Pro-Choice America will continue its work to show the contrasting positions of these extreme anti-choice candidates, like Romney, with leaders like pro-choice President Obama who has a strong record of championing women’s rights.”
