New Poll Shows Markey Leading By Double DigitsVoters see Markey as the candidate who stands up to Big Oil and protects a woman’s right to choose
WASHINGTON, DC – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and NARAL Pro-Choice America today released new polling in the Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary that shows Democratic and independent voters overwhelming support Ed Markey's strong track record supporting a woman's right to choose and standing up to Big Oil. The poll also shows Congressman Ed Markey leading Congressman Stephen Lynch by double digits, 42% to 28%.
"It's no wonder Ed Markey is ahead when so many Massachusetts voters want a Senator they can depend on to protect a woman's freedom and privacy," said Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. "In this political climate where roll backs on women's rights have been front and center, Ed Markey has been a steadfast proponent of ensuring access to reproductive-health care. NARAL Pro-Choice America will do all we can to support the only candidate in this race we can trust to uphold those values: Congressman Ed Markey."
"Massachusetts voters want Ed Markey fighting for them in the U.S. Senate because he's spent his career fighting for them. LCV will make sure that voters learn about his efforts to stand up to Big Oil and hold corporate polluters accountable," said Navin Nayak, LCV Senior Vice President of Campaigns.
The poll found that primary voters overwhelmingly share Markey's views over Lynch's on key issues - 81% of primary voters prefer a candidate who supports a woman's right to choose, and 75% favor a candidate who voted for President Obama's health-care reform law. Additionally, 69% of primary voters say that Markey's efforts to make sure that oil companies pay for oil spills is a very strong reason to vote for him.
Last month, LCV Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who promote sound environmental policies, endorsed Ed Markey for U.S. Senate, highlighting how he built his career around protecting the environment and wrote landmark legislation combating climate change and protecting public health.
More recently, the NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC endorsed Ed Markey to represent Massachusetts in the U.S. Senate and gave the maximum contribution of $5,000 to his special primary election. NARAL Pro-Choice America and its affiliate, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, have more than 128,000 activists, members, and supporters who we will organize in support of Ed Markey.
