NARAL Pro-Choice America Congratulates Ed Markey for Defeating His Anti-Choice Challenger
Washington, D.C. – In what she called a victory for women, NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue congratulated its PAC-endorsed candidate, Ed Markey, for his win in the Massachusetts Democratic primary special election for Senate.
NARAL Pro-Choice America’s campaign targeted Independent pro-choice voters with more than 30,000 phone calls and a door-to-door field effort to drive them to the polls. NARAL Pro-Choice America also worked with its state affiliate, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, to encourage the state’s nearly 90,000-member activists to support the fully pro-choice candidate in this special election primary.
“On behalf of NARAL Pro-Choice America, our member activists and volunteers, we’re very pleased with the outcome of this race,” Hogue said. “Ed Markey was the only candidate who women can trust to protect our right to choose. Just as we saw in the 2012 election cycle, Americans will support candidates who stand for reproductive freedom. Massachusetts voters acted on their pro-choice values and rejected the anti-choice candidate, Stephen Lynch.”
In conjunction with the League of Conservation Voters, NARAL Pro-Choice America released a poll which found that 81 percent of primary voters prefer a candidate who is pro-choice. Moreover, while 52 percent of Massachusetts’ voters call themselves Independents, 70 percent of those Independent voters identify as pro-choice, creating a unique opportunity for NARAL Pro-Choice America.
In addition to the organization’s efforts on the ground, NARAL Pro-Choice America PAC made the maximum contribution of $5,000 to Markey’s campaign for the special primary.
