NARAL Pro-Choice America Calls Out Ken Cuccinelli’s Performance During Tonight’s Virginia Gubernatorial Debate
In tonight's Virginia gubernatorial debate, Ken Cuccinelli failed to defend his record on the top issues on the minds of female voters – the key constituency in this race. NARAL Pro-Choice America released the following statement from president Ilyse Hogue:
“Ken Cuccinelli’s claim during tonight’s debate that he has worked to protect women was a slap in the face to the women of Virginia who have to live with the consequences of his real record. Let’s be clear: Cuccinelli is the only candidate in this race who has actively worked to take money away from family-planning programs. He has supported bills that would ban common forms of birth control, mandate forced ultrasounds, and ban abortion care for women in cases of rape or incest.
“It's no wonder that Cuccinelli championed a bill to funnel state money to the crisis pregnancy centers that lie to women when seeking medical care, given the way he misled voters tonight.
“The stakes in this race are too high for women and families in Virginia to take a chance on Ken Cuccinelli. Terry McAuliffe is the only candidate in this race that women can trust. Tonight McAuliffe said, ‘I think women in Virginia have had enough of Ken Cuccinelli’s experience.’ I couldn’t agree with him more.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia has been working on the ground to educate voters about Ken Cuccinelli’s anti-choice record. The organization’s executive director, Tarina Keene, had this to say:
“Tonight, Ken Cuccinelli continued an increasingly desperate pattern of running away from his record on women’s rights and health. Virginia women and families know better than to trust empty, supposedly pro-women statements from the same man who built his career demonstrating a complete lack of trust in women to make their own personal, private decisions. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia has been on the ground for weeks talking to thousands of voters across the Commonwealth, and I can tell you this much: Virginians are not buying Cuccinelli’s revision of history. NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia will spend the next six weeks continuing to expose Cuccinelli’s real agenda, and mark my words – Virginia women will outright reject Cuccinelli on Election Day.”
The Washington Post's most recent poll shows Terry McAuliffe leading Ken Cuccinelli by 8 points, 47 to 39, a lead fueled by McAuliffe's 24 point lead among women.
