Race of the Week

U.S. House Race in Minnesota 3: Pro-Choice Ashwin Madia (D) v. Anti-Choice State Rep. Erik Paulsen (R)

Ashwin Madia (D), an Iraq war veteran and attorney, is running for an open seat in this swing district. Electing Madia is critically important and will move another seat to the pro-choice column.

  • Madia is fully pro-choice, and stated on his Stonewall DFL questionnaire, "The next Congressperson from the Third Congressional District needs to be both a strong advocate for pro-choice legislation as well as someone who will recognize and take a firm stand against future 'stealth' efforts to undermine a woman's right to choose. I pledge to be that kind of Congressperson if I am fortunate enough to earn your support in this race." (http://lloydletta.blogspot.com/2008/01/ashwin-madias-stonewall-dfl.html, accessed 4/2/08)

Erik Paulsen (R) is a state representative - and no friend to a woman's right to choose.

  • State Rep. Paulsen is anti-choice, consistently earning 0% ratings from NARAL Pro-Choice Minnesota and 100% ratings from Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life.
  • Paulsen introduced numerous pieces of anti-choice legislation in the Minnesota State House, including bills on abortion reporting requirements, constitutional standards for abortion, biased counseling, and mandatory delays.
