U.S. Senate Race in Colorado: Pro-Choice Rep. Mark Udall (D) v. Anti-Choice Bob Schaffer (R)
Rep. Mark Udall (D) currently represents Colorado's 2nd district and is running to fill Sen. Wayne Allard's seat, who is anti-choice and retiring. A Udall victory would give us a much needed pro-choice pick-up in the Senate!
- Rep. Udall has received a 100% pro-choice rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America every year since he was elected to Congress in 1998.
- On his campaign website Rep. Udall writes "As a matter of constitutional rights, however, I do not believe we can compromise a woman's right to make her own decisions with regard to her reproductive health. My view is that we should have a policy of making abortion safe and legal, but rare--and that good information about family planning, contraception, adoption, sexually-transmitted diseases and other reproductive health matters should be a part of our consideration."
- Rep. Udall is a co-sponsor of the Prevention First Act.
Former Rep. Bob Schaffer (R) is staunchly anti-choice, opposing not just legal abortion but also contraception and sex education.
- Schaffer is the Colorado Chairman of the Judicial Confirmation Network, a right-wing organization that supports the appointment of conservative judges, including Supreme Court Justices.
- As a member of the Colorado Board of Education, Schaffer expressed support for federal funding for "abstinence-only" programs. [Board notes from April 2008, http://www.hudak.org/BoardNotes/2008/BN-APR.htm accessed on September 29, 2008]
