Mississippi voters defeated the anti-choice "personhood" measure. This is a great pro-choice victory.
The measure, known as Initiative 26, was a direct challenge to legal abortion across the country.
The goal of Initiative 26 was to ban abortion – with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the woman. It also could have outlawed some of the most common methods of birth control. And it could have restricted couples' access to fertility treatments such as in-vitro fertilization.
To help defeat this divisive measure, we mobilized our member activists in Mississippi, including phone banks held in partnership with other pro-choice organizations. We also launched a nationwide public-education campaign through our 500,000-strong email list and social media on the threats of "personhood" measures.
