With very rare exceptions, almost all women who obtain health care through federal programs are subject to additional restrictions on their right to choose. Unlike women who can use their own funds or private health insurance to pay for abortion care, women insured by federal health plans often lack the means to pay for an abortion.
Women who are affected by these dangerous and discriminatory government policies include:
- Low-income women who receive health care through Medicare or Medicaid;
- Federal employees and their dependents;
- Military personnel and their dependents;
- Residents of the District of Columbia;
- Native-American women;
- Peace Corps volunteers; and
- Women in federal prisons.
