Health-Care Reform: What You Should Know

Stop the Abortion Coverage Ban

Pro-Choice Americans make their voices heard: 97,218 activists signed our petition to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid! The New York Times, Roll Call, and Politico reported on our delivery of the petition.

What Happened

On November 7, 2009, the House passed a last-minute anti-choice amendment to health reform, dealing an outrageous blow to women's freedom and privacy.

The amendment, offered by anti-choice Reps. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) and Joe Pitts (R-Penn.), makes it virtually impossible for private insurance companies that participate in the new system to offer abortion coverage to women. This would have the effect of denying women the right to use their own personal private funds to purchase an insurance plan with abortion coverage in the new health system — a radical departure from the status quo. Presently, more than 85 percent of private-insurance plans cover abortion services.

The amendment was adopted by a margin of 240-194. See how your member of the House voted. A "yea" vote is an anti-choice vote.

The fight then moved to the Senate.
