NARAL Pro-Choice America Joins Senate Leaders in Urging Swift Action on Sotomayor Nomination
Washington, D.C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, reiterated her organization's support for the confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor as the next associate justice on the U.S. Supreme Court.
Today, representatives of the organization joined Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, other senators, and progressive organizations at a Capitol Hill news conference. The event underscored the growing momentum behind Sotomayor's nomination, which the Judiciary Committee approved in a bipartisan vote yesterday.
"We are proud to stand with so many Senate leaders and progressive allies in calling for the swift confirmation of Judge Sonia Sotomayor as the next associate justice of the Supreme Court," Keenan said. "During the hearings, Judge Sotomayor articulated several times that the constitutional right to privacy includes the right to choose. Her responses to privacy-related questions, along with the strong support she received from key pro-choice allies on the Judiciary Committee, are among the reasons pro-choice Americans are supporting this nomination."
On July 21, NARAL Pro-Choice America issued a statement in partnership with NARAL Pro-Choice New York announcing the organizations' support for Judge Sotomayor. That statement is available on the organization's website: http://www.prochoiceamerica.org/news/press-releases/2009/pr07212009_sotomayorsupport.html
