NARAL Pro-Choice America Issues Assessment of Health-Reform Efforts
Washington, D.C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, issued the following statement regarding health-reform efforts in Congress.
"It is disappointing and frustrating that some members of Congress are using health reform to single out abortion care and treat it differently than other medical services. These lawmakers, most notably Reps. Joe Pitts (R-Pa.) and Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), are obsessed with attacking a woman's right to choose and interfering in the doctor-patient relationship. Fortunately, the Energy and Commerce Committee last night rejected a Pitts-Stupak proposal that would have banned abortion care for many women who have that coverage now. Without a doubt, Pitts, Stupak, and their allies, who now have failed to secure passage of extreme proposals in three House committees, will continue their obsession with attacking abortion as this process moves forward. We will mobilize our activists to call on fair-minded members of Congress to reject these extreme and divisive measures that are designed solely to derail the entire health-reform effort."
