California Attorney General Kamala Harris to Deliver Keynote Address at Event Commemorating Roe v. WadeOscar-nominee Felicity Huffman will serve as event’s emcee; Emmy nominee Connie Briton of Friday Night Lights to receive Champion of Choice Award
Washington, D.C. –NARAL Pro-Choice America announced that California Attorney General Kamala Harris, whom Politico named one of the Top 10 Breakout Stars of 2010, will be the keynote speaker at the organization’s luncheon commemorating the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The event is slated for Thursday, February 10 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.
“Kamala Harris is a true defender of a woman’s right to choose in California, and we are thrilled that she will be traveling to D.C. to commemorate the importance of preserving the protections of Roe v. Wade,” said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America. “Kamala is an inspiring and visionary leader. At a time when so many lawmakers at the state and federal level are attacking a woman’s right to choose, Kamala is an example of the many elected officials who are standing up to this divisive agenda. As the event’s keynote speaker, she joins a list that includes former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist Cynthia Tucker, and Sen. Al Franken.”
Harris, who received the endorsement of NARAL Pro-Choice California PrivacyPAC during the 2010 election cycle, made history as the first woman—and first African American and South Asian woman—to serve as California’s top law-enforcement official. A graduate of Howard University and the U.C. Hastings College of Law, Harris’ innovative work as a prosecutor has earned her national acclaim. Harris made choice a key issue in her race for attorney general and spoke out against three anti-choice ballot measures that, fortunately, voters in the Golden State rejected in 2005, 2006, and 2008.
The event also will include supporters from the entertainment community. Felicity Huffman, the Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning star of Desperate Housewives, will serve as the event’s emcee. Emmy-nominated actress Connie Britton, the star of NBC/DirecTV’s Friday Night Lights, will receive the Champion of Choice Award for her heroic and critically acclaimed performance in the series, which included a ground-breaking abortion-related storyline.
The luncheon, opened to credentialed press, will start at 12 p.m. on Thursday, February 10 in the Regency Ballroom of the Omni Shoreham, 2500 Calvert St. NW, Washington D.C.
