Bono Mack Trades in Moderate Credentials to Wage War on Contraception‘Fake Moderate’ abandons promise of a jobs agenda to attack access to birth control
Washington D.C. – Today, Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, denounced U.S. Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) for abandoning her campaign promise to focus on jobs and the economy and joining the House leadership’s ill-conceived war on contraception.
"Today, Mary Bono Mack became a 'Great Pretender,' as the alleged moderate voted against an amendment to protect women's access to contraception,” Keenan said. “Now that Rep. Bono Mack has signed her name to the war on contraception, NARAL Pro-Choice America will ensure that voters are aware of her misguided priorities."
Today, the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee debated an extreme anti-choice bill [H.R. 358] that, among other egregious provisions, allows hospitals to refuse abortion care to a woman even if her life depends on it. Pro-choice committee members attempted to amend the bill to ensure that the legislation did not hamper states' abilities to ensure women access to contraceptive coverage. Rep. Bono Mack voted against the amendment, and effectively helped to block its passage.
Later this week, the House will vote on legislation that would completely defund the nation’s domestic family-planning program – Title X – which provides millions of men and women access to contraception, cancer screenings, and other basic health care. Keenan said that NARAL Pro-Choice America will be closely monitoring Rep. Bono Mack to see how far she plans to take her attacks on contraception.
“If today’s vote is any indication, Rep. Bono Mack has completely deserted her once moderate stance to join House leaders who are so extreme that they are expanding their attacks on abortion care to include attacks on birth control and family planning,” Keenan said. “We call on Rep. Bono Mack to seriously rethink her priorities, and assure her that NARAL Pro-Choice America will remind California voters of her broken promises leading up to the 2012 election.”
