Lance Wages War on ContraceptionPro-choice group to hold House member accountable for abandoning jobs agenda and voting to take away access to birth control and cancer screenings for millions of Americans
Washington D.C. – At the same time that Rep. Leonard Lance (R-N.J.) returned home for a congressional recess, Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, said that her organization will launch a public-education campaign to hold him accountable for abandoning the promise of a jobs agenda to join the House leadership’s two front-war on contraception.
"Can Rep. Lance tell his constituents just how many jobs attacking contraception will create?” Keenan asked. “We will remind New Jersey voters just how out of touch Rep. Lance is with their values and priorities before they cast their ballots in November 2012.”
Last week, Rep. Lance supported two egregious attacks on access to contraception, cancer screenings, Pap smears, and other basic health care. Lance voted for an amendment to a bill that bars funding to Planned Parenthood for non-abortion-related medical care. Lance took this attack one step further by voting to eliminate all funding for Title X, the nation’s only domestic family-planning program.
Keenan said that since Rep. Lance signed onto the war on contraception, constituents deserve to know the answers to a few questions:
- When did attacking women’s access to birth control become a higher priority than fulfilling your campaign promise of focusing on jobs and the economy?
- Why are you following an agenda that not only attacks abortion coverage, but also blocks women’s access to birth control, which is the best way to prevent unintended pregnancy and thus reduce the need for abortion?
- Why do you want to repeat the mistakes of other so called ‘moderates’ who were kicked out of office for failing to focus on creating jobs for their constituents?
“Rep. Lance’s constituents will soon know that his priorities do not lie with his district, but with the extreme anti-choice House leadership that is pushing an out-of-control war on contraception,” Keenan said.
