Statement on President Obama’s Selection of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz to Lead the DNC
Washington, D. C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, praised President Obama’s decision to nominate pro-choice champion Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) as the new chair of the Democratic National Committee.
“We applaud President Obama for selecting a champion of choice for a position that will be crucial for success in the 2012 elections. We look forward to continuing to work with Rep. Wasserman Schultz as she moves into this new role,” Keenan said. “The anti-choice leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives is launching far-reaching and unprecedented attacks on women’s freedom and privacy. In addition, we have seen anti-choice assaults from state legislatures and governors throughout the country. Add to this that individuals who are considering challenging President Obama are lining up to support these extreme measures, and it’s important that voters see a clear contrast between pro-choice and anti-choice candidates running in 2012. Rep. Wasserman Schultz will clearly communicate the difference between pro-choice policies that protect our privacy and anti-choice attacks that open the door to even more political interference in our personal decisions. This is an especially good day for the DNC, President Obama, and the voters who will be voting pro-choice in 2012.”
