Senate Stands Up for Women, Blocks Boehner’s Efforts to Defund Planned Parenthood
Washington D.C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, praised the Senate for refusing to support House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) push to defund Planned Parenthood, a move that would have taken away millions of Americans’ access to contraception, cancer screenings, and other basic health care.
“Speaker John Boehner and his allies were willing to bring our government to the brink of shutdown to attack women’s freedom and privacy,” Keenan said. “Fortunately, the Senate listened to the American people, who support family-planning services and are outraged by Speaker Boehner’s far-reaching and divisive agenda. Instead of focusing on creating jobs, anti-choice lawmakers want to interfere in our personal, private decisions. These politicians are out of touch with our country’s values and priorities.”
Keenan said NARAL Pro-Choice America’s activist network has channeled hundreds of thousands of messages to Congress since January. As a result of Speaker Boehner’s fixation with attacking choice, NARAL Pro-Choice America’s online activist network is adding, on average, 1,000 names a day.
