Lawmakers Inject Anti-Abortion Politics into Yet Another BillHouse passes amendment to public-health bill that puts women’s health at risk by barring teaching centers from training on abortion care
Washington, D.C. – Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, called passage of yet another anti-choice measure by the U.S. House of Representatives a reminder to Americans of just how far anti-choice politicians will go to wage a War on Women.
“Anti-choice politicians can’t help themselves. After bringing the government to the brink of a shutdown in their quest to defund family-planning centers, these extreme lawmakers will use any bill to launch attacks on a woman’s right to choose,” Keenan said. “This agenda is out of touch with our nation’s values and priorities, and we will make sure that the members of Congress who are voting for these far-reaching measures feel the heat from their constituents.”
Keenan said the amendment, offered by Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), would bar qualified teaching health centers from using federal funds for comprehensive medical training that includes instruction in the provision of abortion services.
Keenan said the amendment is an unprecedented restriction on medical training. It would limit drastically doctors’ ability to receive comprehensive and necessary instruction in reproductive-health care, thereby putting women’s health at risk.
“Regardless of how one feels about legal abortion, reasonable lawmakers can agree that doctors should be as well trained as possible to deal with any medical situation that may arise,” Keenan said. “Women should have access to the best care possible in any and all circumstances. This amendment is yet another example of the disregard anti-choice politicians have for women’s health.”
