Boehner Budget Launches Yet Another Round in War on Women

House Speaker proposes eliminating funding for birth control and cancer screenings, defunding Planned Parenthood, and reviving failed Stupak abortion-coverage ban

Washington, D.C. – Today, Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, called anti-choice House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-Ohio) proposed budget for next year another example of just how out of touch he is with the country’s values and priorities.

“We believe in protecting a woman’s ability to make personal, private decisions with her doctor, and Speaker Boehner’s budget violates these fundamental American values in several ways,” Keenan said. “The Boehner Budget would defund Title X, the nation’s family-planning program, which serves millions of Americans each year. It also would effectively end private insurance coverage of abortion in state health-insurance exchanges. How will taking away women’s freedom and privacy lead to the job creation he promised voters?”

Keenan said Speaker Boehner’s budget would:

  • Eliminate Title X, the nation’s family-planning program;
  • Defund Planned Parenthood;
  • Cut funding for science-based teen-pregnancy-prevention initiatives and redirect those funds into failed “abstinence-only” programs;
  • Bring back the infamous Stupak abortion-coverage ban, which would effectively ban coverage of abortion in the new health-care system. Currently, 87 percent of private plans currently include abortion coverage.

Keenan said the budget comes on the heels of a politically motivated investigation into Planned Parenthood by an anti-choice House subcommittee. In addition, the House earlier this year voted to defund Planned Parenthood and eliminate funding for family-planning programs. The House also passed legislation that included the Stupak abortion-coverage ban and voted to add an anti-choice amendment to an agriculture spending bill.
