STATEMENT: NARAL Pro-Choice America’s Ilyse Hogue on New Tasteless Ad and Campaign Funded By Koch Brothers to Convince College Students to Opt-Out of Obamacare Exchanges
Today, Generation Opportunity, a Koch brother-aligned group, launched tasteless ads as part of a campaign to convince young people to opt out of Obamacare exchanges. They are spending six figures on the ad targeting 20 college campuses. NARAL Pro-Choice America released the following statement, in response, from president Ilyse Hogue:
“Generation Opportunity’s new online ad ‘Want Creepy Uncle Sam?’ not only defiles our American mascot but disturbingly compared the ACA to sexual assault. This ad is brought to you by the same people who force the government between our legs when it comes to abortion access, forced ultra-sounds and birth control. At a time when the gender gap between parties is significant, this ad will only further alienate women.
“Generation Opportunity is another Koch brother-funded misnomer that is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to try to convince students to pay a $95 fine to give up popular benefits like free preventive care, contraception coverage, and the ability to stay on their parents’ insurance plans. The Koch brother’s assumption that the 6.6 million young people who have been able to stay on their parents’ insurance plans until 26, including 3.1 million newly insured young people, would give it all up for a pizza party is insulting, to say the least.
“The Koch brothers, who also funnel money to anti-choice groups, like the Susan B. Anthony List and Americans United for Life, are using this campaign as yet another vehicle to restrict access to the health care young people need, including birth control. All this while attempting to trick students into accepting the vestiges of a broken insurance system that has historically failed to protect them from gender discrimination, expensive premiums, and denials based on pre-existing conditions.
“Young people will not be fooled. NARAL Pro-Choice America is working on 42 campuses in 12 states and the District of Columbia. We are working side by side with the most pro-choice generation in American history to expand access to reproductive health care."
