NARAL Pro-Choice America Announces Plan for "Ultimate Pro-Choice Meetup" Connecting Marchers with At-Home Supporters Online
E-Mailed Messages to Be Shared With Marchers; Camera-Phone Pictures Shared Around World
WASHINGTON, DC – NARAL Pro-Choice America, the leading national advocate for personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose, announced plans today for unique online activities to extend the reach of Sunday’s March for Women’s Lives around the country and the world.
The pro-choice group is providing a mechanism for supporters to post photographs on its Web site – www.ProChoiceAmerica.org – during the March, including camera-phone images from the Mall, or shots of groups of supporters watching from home. The site will also enable activists who could not come to Washington to send messages to the marchers, which will be displayed on the Mall and online during the event.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Kate Michelman said: “One of the most powerful things about a march like this is the sense of community among those who share a commitment to protecting a woman’s right to choose. Through the strategic use of technology, we’re able to extend that feeling around the country -- online activists who are on the Mall can share in real time what it’s like to be part of a historic event, while those who can’t be here will have a way to make their voices heard. This March will be the ultimate pro-choice MeetUp. We're vaulting the longstanding citizen action tool of a march into the 21st century."
These efforts build upon a host of successful online activist efforts by NARAL Pro-Choice America leading up to the March. The members of the group’s online Choice Action Network have recruited tens of thousands of marchers with messages featuring Flash animation, video clips, and other cutting-edge tactics. An online contest to design an official poster for the March drew hundreds of entries. NARAL Pro-Choice America also co-produced with former presidential candidate Howard Dean on a video message emailed to his list of nearly 700,000 supporters, featuring Dean and Kate Michelman.
The March for Women’s Lives, a historic gathering of pro-choice Americans from every walk of life, will take place this Sunday, April 25 on the National Mall in Washington, DC. It is sponsored by NARAL Pro-Choice America, the American Civil Liberties Union, the Black Women’s Health Imperative, Feminist Majority, the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health, the National Organization for Women, and the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
