NARAL Pro-Choice America Concerned About Looming Threats to Choice at All Levels of Government

Republican Candidate in Oklahoma Favors Death Penalty for Doctors who Perform Abortions

WASHINGTON, DC – NARAL Pro-Choice America, the leading national advocate of personal privacy and a woman’s right to choose, expressed its concern over the GOP nomination of Tom Coburn for U.S. Senator yesterday in Oklahoma. Dr. Coburn is vehemently anti-choice, as illustrated by his recent statement in an interview with the Associated Press; "I favor the death penalty for abortionists and other people who take life," Coburn said.

Elizabeth Cavendish, NARAL Pro-Choice America’s Interim President said, “This is just one example of the length to which the far-right is willing to go to take away a woman’s right to choose and to criminalize a very personal, private decision between a woman and her doctor. I am appalled that as a physician, Dr. Coburn would make such a statement about his colleagues.”

Coburn’s candidacy is an ominous vision of what the future may hold for choice, unless America’s pro-choice majority makes it voice heard this fall by electing pro-choice leaders. As the political arm of the pro-choice movement, NARAL Pro-Choice America has launched an aggressive plan to reach targeted voters – particularly younger women in key states – to ensure that far-right extremists such as Coburn are not allowed to determine the future of America’s women and families. The organization is using a variety of tools, including direct mail, phone calls, email advocacy and grassroots activism.
