Coburn and Santorum Continue Crusade Against Responsible Birth Control

Proposed Restrictions Put Ideology First, Risks Increase in Teen Pregnancy

(Washington, DC) – The growing radical right crusade against birth control continued on Capitol Hill today with a new bill by Senators Tom Coburn and Rick Santorum to limit access to birth control, potentially leading to a significant increase in unintended teen pregnancies and potential abortions. Their bill introduced today comes at same time as a wave of pharmacies has begun rejecting birth control prescriptions in locations from coast to coast.

Nancy Keenan, President of NARAL Pro-Choice America, called the Coburn-Santorum legislation a distraction designed to divert public attention from their effort to block women’s access to birth control.

"We believe in a culture of personal freedom and personal responsibility. That means young people should have honest, medically accurate sex education that includes teaching abstinence, protects against unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, and access to birth control if they need it ," Keenan said. "Senator Coburn, Senator Santorum and the other anti-birth control zealots behind this bill are determined to impose their values on others, even if it means more unintended pregnancies and an increased need for abortions. They oppose honest, medically accurate sex education. They know their positions are unpopular with Americans, so they are trying to endanger the health of young people to score political points with the radical right."
